From the Official Johnny Y. Bosch Site
He was a martial artist, then a Power Ranger, and finally Vash the Stampede. Johnny
Yong Bosch has been part of the hottest shows in North America, one which was a
general-interest sensation and the other that remains a fan favorite (just count
the Vash costumers at a convention). But to listen to Bosch, both prime roles
just...happened. After Bosch filled an opening in the Power Rangers show, he did
an independent martial arts film, and "For the stunts they had this guy who
co-produced the movie and had connections with Pioneer. He said 'Hey, you've got
this hero voice.' I really didn't think I had one, but he said it was cool. He
said 'We're doing this show called Trigun, why don't you audition?'"
Bosch liked the look of the Japanese original, auditioned and got the lead role
of Vash. A few months later, he found himself as the star in a wild and crazy
show which turns out to have an unexpected serious edge, which Bosch had to
interpret. Did he agonize over the performance? Not really. "I just take it as
it is - that's cool," he said about playing Vash. "That was my first time to
play animation stuff so it was tough. They gave me the first couple of episodes
to watch, and Vash did a lot of screaming and high pitched voices...and he was
crazy. I didn't really prepare, actually - I just went in to the booth."
The lack of over-preparation included Vash's signature phrase of "Love and
Peace," which Bosch and the Trigun dub script took straight from the Japanese
original. "It was so weird," recalled Bosch. "It was like putting a message on
an answering machine." Bosch found that Vash and his performance had to take a
serious direction as Trigun progressed. "In the beginning he was crazy and wild,
and I wondered why he was so goofy. I eventually figured out he had this dark
past and was putting on this facade. It wasn't hard for me to switch over."
While Bosch claims not to prepare much, he also admits studio dubbing of anime
is tougher than the live-action martial arts work he's done.
